Based on the movie we see there are many references that can be interpreted:

1. The struggle between reality vs virtual machine world.

Example: Should I go outside and play tennis when I can play the virtual tennis game in my living room. Both are fun.

2. Human greed for money.

Example: In many countries workers are exploited to dig up diamonds or gold which are just wants and not needs.

3. How love and happiness is important in life. People are willing to give up anything. For example the main character was willing to forget about getting his legs back to be happy.

Example: If one falls in love in a chat room, it could be so fun that they are willing to just chat on there for the rest of their life. Sometimes, not meeting the person for years.

4. How humans are all connected together. Represented by the tree of life.

Example: If you meet someone in the street chances are that one of your Facebook friends will have them on their friends list and know them.
